Memorial Ceremony for John Shafer Wilson Photos and information donated by Nell Cassata After 96 years of laying in an unmarked grave on private property in Hardeman County, TN, a civil war headstone was placed on John’s grave in June and a memorial service was conducted on November 17, 2001. The ceremony was conducted by Clyde J. Getman, Commander, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sultana Camp 1 and the Department of Tennessee at the old McCarley Cemetery in Hardeman County, TN. Also present were representatives of the Mary Bickerdyke Tent #2, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of Confederate Veterans of the Civil War and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Fifty three decendants and friends attended from Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. The program included the Hymn, "America"; a summery of events that led up to "today"; the poem by Pvt. Aaron Harlan of the 21st; a flag and flower to the oldest decendant; musket salute; unveiling of the headstone; floral tribute by John's GGG-Grandson and Taps. |
